Dog owners have been warned they could face prosecution if their pets are not under control, after a dog killed a deer in Richmond Park.

The deer was killed on December 29 by a mixed-breed dog near the Ham Cross plantation, near Ham Gate, and its owners have been spoken to by police.

A Royal Parks spokesman said: “Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. We take the welfare of our deer very seriously.

“Our message is clear; if you cannot control your dog then ensure it is on a leash and keep your distance from deer. Otherwise owners will face prosecution.”

Dogs are one of the leading causes of deer casualties in Richmond Park and Bushy Park, both by fatally injuring them and by giving chase and forcing deer into the path of oncoming cars.

It is an offence to allow a dog to chase, worry or injure a deer or other animals in the Royal Parks.

Ron Crompton, the chairman of the Friends of Richmond Park group, urged dog owners to always keep dogs on leads anywhere near the park’s deer.

Mr Crompton said: “We are always saddened to hear of deer deaths or injuries caused by uncontrolled dogs.

“Many of our 2,500 members are dog owners. Often the dog is normally well behaved, but it can be unpredictable with deer around so owners need to be extra vigilant and careful.”

Metropolitan Police confirmed the circumstances around the deer’s death are under investigation.
