Somebody tried to set fire to part of the track at Twickenham Station on Tuesday afternoon, according to British Transport Police (BTP).
Trains travelling through the station were stopped after a flammable liquid had been placed on the track at about 4pm.
A BTP spokeswoman said: “Officers attended and carried out a search where they found a liquid substance, which they believe was placed on the tracks deliberately to cause a fire.
“This item had subsequently damaged part of the track.
“Officers are working to establish how the substance came to be on the tracks.”
