Murdered Hampton teenager Jamil Palmer's family believe "justice has finally been served" after his murderer's life sentence was upheld at the Court of Appeal.

Mohammed Barre, now aged 19, will spend at least 17 years behind bars after an appeal against his conviction was quashed on Wednesday.

He fatally stabbed former Richmond College and Kingston College student Mr Palmer, 18, in broad daylight at Crane Park, near Whitton, on May 6, 2014.

DECEMBER 2014: Jamil Palmer murderer sentenced to at least 17 years in prison

The Palmer family said in a statement on Thursday the result has given them closure and appealed for young people to consider the consequences of knife crime.

Murdered: Jamil Palmer, 18, was killed at Crane Park, near the Butts Farm estate

They said: "What are often petty disputes are costing lives because some young people are resorting to knives and tragically the consequences are all too often fatal.

"To those young people who carry knives, take a look at the devastation that you are causing to the families - is it really worth spending what should be the best years of your life in prison?

"If you just stopped and thought things through, I am sure that many would not be carrying knives.

"After a long, very difficult 20 months after Jamil was taken, justice has finally been served.

"Of course we would give anything to have Jamil back with us, what's done is done and we now look forward to some closure and remembering the funny, loyal, loving boy that he was.

"He will always shine down on us."

"No chance": DCI Noel McHugh said Jamil 'never stood a chance'

Mr Palmer, who attended Teddington School and Hampton Junior School, died after Barre, then aged 17, stabbed him in the heart during a pre-arranged fight with Barre at Crane Park.

The pair had a long-running feud and had fought earlier that day in Browells Lane, Feltham.

A video of Barre, of Byron Avenue in Hounslow, lying unconscious was circulated on mobile phone app Snapchat, leaving him "humiliated".

Passing down sentence, Judge Richard Hone QC told Barre said that Barre wanted to show Mr Palmer that he was "a force to be reckoned with”.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, of the homicide and major crime command in Putney, said: “Only now can Jamil Palmer’s family start to try and move forward with their lives.

“That day, they lost a son in what was supposed to be a petty squabble – however, Barre brought along a knife and Jamil never stood a chance.

Devastation: Police urge people to look at a photo of Jamil before picking up a knife

“He is a dangerous individual who robbed a family of a much-loved son and he will now not be released from prison until he is 35.

“For anyone contemplating carrying a knife, just look at a picture of Jamil and try to understand to devastation knife crime causes for families and communities.”

Four other teenagers were acquitted of Mr Palmer's murder during the Old Bailey trial in December 2014.

After the brutal attack, the group traveled to Twickenham on a 110 bus before taking a train to Feltham.

During the trial, Barre, who had a string of previous convictions including robbery, came to blows with his co-defendants and had to be held back by security guards.
