Spicy sausage promotions are causing piles of unwanted litter and adding to the Rugby World Cup clean up costs, says Richmond Council.

Up to £1,000 of taxpayers’ money is being spent each match day removing Peperami wrappers from Twickenham’s streets, according to the council.

Samples of the pork sausage snack are being handed out between Twickenham Station and the stadium, reportedly by marketing company Bugle Communications.

The Richmond and Twickenham Times spoke to a receptionist at Bugle Communications who said while the sausage makers were a client, as far as he was aware the agency was not doing any work for them during the tournament.

A video of staff distributing the free snacks in a Peperami van similar to the ones seen in Twickenham during the tournament is on Bugle’s website.

Richmond Council has written to Bugle and Peperami manufacturers Jack Links asking them to take more control over their promotion and a council spokesman said when promoters were asked to move on they swiftly returned to hand out more sausages.

Council cabinet member for environment Pamel Fleming said: “Quite simply Peperami are showing no corporate or social responsibility for the environment or the local area. This is not good enough.

“Officers work hard after each match to clear up all the waste caused by the crowds.

“This is now been made a lot harder by Peperami, swamping the area with their promotional staff, who show zero respect for the environment.”

Coun Fleming urged the organisations to review their approach or offer to cover the cost of removing the wrappers.

Jack Links has been contacted for comment.
