High-octane truck stunts could become an annual fixture at Twickenham stadium, despite opposition from neighbours concerned about noise.

Richmond Council has received 16 letters of objection to the proposals, urging it to reject the application submitted by the RFU.

The plans would allow American live show production company Field Entertainment to host its Monster Jam event at the home of England rugby during 2016 and 2017.

But residents hope to face down the proposals, claiming it would cause noise and disruption for Twickenham people.

Helen Suddaby, of Varsity Drive, said: "Cheering rugby fans is one thing, the revving and screeching these monster trucks create is quite another and is totally unacceptable.

"In addition they are planning the use of amplified sound in the 'static showcase' which is to be situated outside the stadium and will create even more noise.

"Additional noise will be created by the trucks travelling back and forth between this outside 'static showcase' and the stadium."

Francis McInery, of community group Heatham Alliance, told the council that the group formally oppose plans for the monster truck extravaganza.

He said: "This is a formal objection to the above planning application, on the grounds of noise and disruption for people and families living in the neighbourhood and potential anti-social behaviour, public nuisance and traffic issues.

"The proposed use is inappropriate for Twickenham stadium and for the locality."

Gary Backler said: "Local businesses and residents suffer these disruptions increasingly frequently as the number and scale of events held at the stadium increases.

"Residents have suffered a particular battering from stadium¬-generated traffic generation, noise and disturbance throughout 2014 and 2015 during preparations for the Rugby World Cup.

"Local businesses and residents deserve a reprieve.

"The RFU should be looking to reduce the number of events held each year in its stadium.

On its website, Monster Jam describes itself as "the perfect sports and entertainment brand mixing racing, showmanship and the ultimate fan experience into one incredible, action packed live show".

It says: "Matched by no other family entertainment property, Monster Jam electrifies crowds with breathtaking stunts and the awesome power of the world’s most popular Monster Jam trucks."

Council officers are expected to reach a decision by October 6.
