East Sheen’s BAFTA winner Tom Hardy stars as not one but both of the notorious Kray twins in the new blockbuster, Legend.

Directed by Brian Helgeland, who won an Oscar for the screenplay for LA Confidential, the crime thriller tells the story of east end twins Ronnie and Reggie who rose to become two of the most notorious gangsters in history.

Filming was mostly completed in East London and Buckinghamshire, though Brockley’s Rivoli Ballroom was also used as a location.

The movie once again puts the Krays into the spotlight.

They were played by Spandau Ballet’s Gary and Martin Kemp in Peter Medak’s 1990 film, The Krays, but Tower House and Reed’s School pupil Hardy has gone one better by portraying both of the brothers.

To tie in with the film’s release on Wednesday, September 9, an exhibition dedicated to the Krays is being set up in the heart of the East End.

Legend of the East End is at 135 Bethnal Green Road from August 28 to September 11 and offers a snapshot of a bygone era. It features work from the likes of Don McCullin, Brian Duffy, Steven Berkoff, and Jocelyn Bain Hogg.

Artefacts include original suits belonging to Ronnie Kray, childhood photos of the brother and their living room recreated with wallpaper, sofas and tea.

It is open from 11am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 7pm on Saturday and 9am to 6pm on Sunday. Admission is free.

Legend is out Wednesday, September 9.
