Twickenham's recently-repaved Church Street was left looking pretty grubby last week - but Richmond Council said it was not its problem.

Council workers jet-washed street markings during the development, which highlighted the dirty state of the rest of the road.

Councillor Gareth Roberts tweeted: "Just days after the official completion of Church Street it's already looking filthy."

He added: "Quite what encouraged them to believe a light stone treatment would be able to withstand the onslaught of exhaust fumes, tyre marks and oil leaks that comes from daily traffic is beyond me.

"It's vital that the Tories now accept they made a mistake with their choice of materials for Church Street and their 'improvements' to Twickenham's pavements and put in place an ongoing cleaning and maintenance budget to keep the town from looking permanently grimy and to give a welcoming appearance for the visitors who'll flock here for the Rugby World Cup."

But a spokesman for the council said, while it would clean up spillages such as paint it "does not operate a pavement washing programme".

They added: "We hope that the cafes and pubs using the outside areas will want to take responsibility for keeping their immediate surroundings clean and tidy."

The line was reportedly no longer visible on Monday morning.
