Twickenham Liberal Democrat candidate Vince Cable told a class of 10-year-old children he still harbours ambitions to be Prime Minister.
Dr Cable visited St James Catholic Primary School, Twickenham, on Monday, April 27, where he was grilled by year 5 pupils.
When asked if he would like to be Prime Minister, he said it was "flattering to be asked".
He added: "I suppose the honest answer is yes but I think it’s unlikely to happen now."
Other questions fired at him included mental health funding, the Middle East conflict and whether Britian should remain in the EU.
Dr Cable said: "I was very impressed by the range of questions I was asked and by the interest the children took in the subject.
"Some of the questions I was asked wouldn’t have been out of place at a hustings meeting, clearly they had all done their homework."
