An application for a new primary free school in the St Margarets and east Twickenham area will be submitted to the Department for Education (DfE) next month.

The Bellevue Place Education Trust (BPET) had hoped to open a school this September but plans fell through when a site failed to be secured.

The preferred site was Ryde House in Richmond Road but it was acquired by Lidl last year and BPET instead announced proposals for the Deer Park School in Richmond.

Business Secretary Vince Cable, Twickenham's Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, approached the supermarket chain asking them to consider schools provision at the site.

The German company has said previously it would consider a "mixed-use scheme" and were in discussions with the Education Funding Agency.

BPET chairman Claire Delaney said: "A crucial element of our application to the DfE is demonstrating a high level of demand for the school.

"We will be building on the overwhelming support already received and will be out and about in the local community over the next few weeks sharing our plans for Richmond Bridge School and collecting expressions of interest.

"We particularly need the support of parents with children due to start primary school in September 2016 and 2017."
