A man was taken to hospital with head injuries following an assault at Teddington Lock last night.

The London Ambulance Service was called at 10.56pm and treated a 28-year-old man for head injuries. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the man was walking over the footbridge towards Ham with a woman at 10.55pm when they were confronted and he suffered the injuries.

Stuart Jones was walking a friend home at about 11pm and saw a man on the ground by the footbridge who was being tended to by two men and a woman.

He said: “He was really confused and bleeding.

“We initially figured they were just calming him down and thought he might just be drunk and had a fall."

Police are unclear as to how many people were involved in the confrontation and are appealing for information about the incident.

Mr Jones said: “I assume now that this guy was attacked and these people came across him.

“He sounded drunk but that might have been because he’d had a bump on the head or something.

“It was dark but I think I did see some blood on the floor next to him, very likely from his head.

“He hadn’t actually got up. The fact that he was still on the floor in the same position must have meant he was hurt badly.”

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
