Blue skies, a children’s obstacle race, skateboards, BMX tricks and a political scooter race were the order of the day at the inaugural TryCycle Twickenham on Twickenham’s Embankment on Sunday.

Fun: The event was held to support the charity and event

The free family fun day, organised by Try Twickenham and children’s charity StreetInvest, also saw a scooter "race" between four of Twickenham’s parliamentary candidates, Vince Cable, Tania Mathias, Tanya Williams and Barry Edwards.

The race saw Dr Cable, Dr Mathias and Ms Williams begin at a leisurely pace before Ukip candidate Mr Edwards scooted ahead of his political rivals.

Liberal Democrat candidate Dr Cable said: "It was a great family event with a huge turnout and was a great advertisement for Twickenham.

"We had a perfectly civilised race between myself, Tania and Tanya, and the Ukip man turned up and thought it was a serious competition.

"It wasn’t supposed to be competitive really, just promoting the charity."

Conservative candidate Dr Mathias said it was a fabulous event.

She said: "It was like when you hear about how Paris is transformed in the summer.

"I’m not sure what Barry Edwards was doing in the race really, he was doing his own thing."

Good laugh: Harlequins supported the day as well

Mr Edwards, a keen cyclist who trains with Twickenham Cycle Club, said: "It was a really good day and I enjoyed the election race.

"We won the little scooter race easily and it shows who is fit for government."

StreetInvest chief executive Duncan Ross said around a thousand people attended the event and thousands of pounds were generated for the charity's causes, which include projects in Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
