A baby and other residents escaped a fire in a block of flats in Kew Bridge Road this morning.

A blaze in the electrical room on the ground floor produced smoke that crept through the corridors and into some flats.

The London Fire Brigade was called at 2.46 am and four fire engines and 21 firefighters attended the scene. The blaze was under control by 5.01am.

A woman and a young baby left a smoke-affected flat before fire crews arrived and were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.

Another man and a woman were led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

Watch manager Alan Moore, who was at the scene, said those who had smoke in their flats were right to get out in a quick and orderly fashion, but offered some advice for people whose homes were not affected.

He said: "However, there were a number of other people who evacuated when they would have been safer staying inside their property.

"Flats and maisonettes are built to give you some protection from fire - a minimum of 30 minutes and up to 60. Walls, floors and doors will hold back flames and smoke for a time. If there is a fire elsewhere in the building but not inside your home you're usually safer staying in your flat unless heat or smoke is affecting you."
