More than 1,800 furious people have signed an online petition calling for an end to Heathrow’s easterly departure routes trial.

The airport has received a daily average of 350 complaints on days people have experienced extra noise due to the trials, and the petition, created by website TeddingtonTown, has received support from residents in Teddington, Twickenham, Richmond and Kingston.

Heathrow is undertaking trials driven by the Government’s Future Airspace Strategy (FAS), with many easterly departure routes diverted over west Teddington, that are intended to continue until 26 January 2015.

Those affected have voiced their frustrations on the petition. Jo Roberts, of Teddington, said: "I chose to live in Teddington because it was not affected by aircraft pollution. Now I feel like I'm living right next to a runway.

"The levels of noise are seriously affecting our quality of life and are a true blight on a once peaceful neighbourhood."

Alexander Wright, who lives in Hampton Hill, said: "There has been a huge increase in volume and frequency of noise including late at night.

"Any prior notification or consultation must have been exceptionally poor as neither I nor any neighbours were aware of any such efforts."

A spokesman from Heathrow said that modernising airspace is necessary in order to improve efficiency and give local communities more predictable noise respite, and that feedback from these trials will be used to inform the airspace’s future design before a 2016 public consultation.

The spokesman said: "These are just temporary changes and no permanent changes to flight paths will be made before everyone has an opportunity to have their say on possible options for flight paths through a public consultation.

"Ultimately it will be to the Government to decide what changes will be made to UK airspace."

Heathrow will hold a public meeting with residents next month. Call 0800 344833 or email noise_complaints@heathrow.com to find out more.
