A father-of-two had to undergo surgery after being knocked off his bike by a car door in Kingston.
Steve Helm, 44, of Willoughby Road, Kingston, said he thought drivers and passengers needed to be more aware of cyclists.
He said: "People need to be a bit more aware and careful there are lots of us cyclists around."
Mr Helm, who was knocked off his bike just before 6pm on Friday, said a car passenger opened a door right in front of him.
He hit the back of the car door and was sent flying.
The accident, on the corner of Wood Street by Bentalls and John Lewis, resulted in Mr Helm having to go to hospital and undergo surgery for his arm and finger.
He said: "I've been cycling for years and nothing. It's the first time this has happened like this but more people are cycling and need to be careful."
