A bus route that takes 50 students to Tiffin Girls’ School will be axed in September 2011, according to Surrey County Council.

Kingston councillors have described the demise of the 801 route from Hinchley Wood to north Kingston as a regressive step, at a time when Kingston Council is promising extra bus capacity in the area if, as planned, a new secondary school was built next to Tiffin Girls’ in Richmond Road.

Tudor ward Councillor David Cunningham said: “There is already a problem there in regards of the extra pressure with the new school, and to find one of the specific links for Tiffin Girls’ is going to be axed sends the wrong message.

“It will be 50 more children going on the existing bus network, which is already feeling the strain at peak times.”

Kingston Council said it had a good working partnership with Transport for London, and said the new school would grow slowly for six or seven years, allowing changes to capacity on other bus routes to be monitored and modified over time.
