Major parties have published their manifestos ahead of county council elections next month.

Surrey goes to the polls on May 4 to decide its county councillors.

A full list of candidates from the Conservative, Green, Labour, Liberal Democrat parties, UKIP, and various residents' association groups was published earlier this week.

Ahead of the election, we have selected a few pledges from major parties' manifestos - where available. But readers are also encouraged to read manifestos in their entirety - including those of residents' association groups, including Epsom and Ewell, Esher, Molesey, Nork, and Thames Ditton.

Readers are also reminded to register to vote by April 13.

Conservatives

Insisted the party was delivering on its election pledges:

  • Overhaul more than 300 miles of road as part of Operation Horizon
  • Ensure winter grit bins are filled, and staff, equipment, and farmer support network are ready
  • Has delivered the equivalent of seven large primary schools in September
  • Create opportunities for young people as part of its Ready to Work and apprenticeship schemes
  • Provided access to superfast broadband for 15,000 homes and businesses
  • Make more Surrey schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted

Green

  • Invest in green jobs which reuse and recycle resources
  • Ensure the highest environmental and efficiency standards are met in new county council developments
  • Defend the county’s green belt
  • Ban hunting, snaring and culling on council-owned land
  • Ensure rail services meet passengers’ needs in terms of cost, quality of service, accessibility, reliability and efficiency
  • Resist expansion at Gatwick and Heathrow airports
  • Start the progress of decarbonising Surrey’s transport to ensure climate change targets are met
  • Ensure sufficient school places are provided in the right places so to cut school-run congestion and meet the county’s long-term needs
  • Oppose cuts to public health
  • Promote an ethical approach by Surrey County Council to the conduct of its own affairs

Labour

  • Invest in education and create more schools
  • Turn Surrey’s streetlights back on
  • Enforce the ban on hunting with hounds
  • Invest in adult social care
  • Cut number of tiers of local government, councillors, admin staff, high-ranking staff and town halls
  • Fix county’s roads
  • Set up a not-for-profit bus operator and push for extension of London’s Oyster Card zone 6
  • Establishment of Business Improvement District in every town centre
  • Protect libraries from closure
  • Save fire stations

Liberal Democrats

  • Introduce 20mph speed limits outside schools and 40mph limits on rural roads
  • Enhance programme to improve both roads and footways
  • Improve flood defences
  • Support voluntary organisations and develop youth provision in rural areas
  • Reinstate opening hours of community recycling centres and remove charges for dumping waste
  • Improve bus services
  • Oppose new runways at Gatwick and Heathrow
  • Support Crossrail 2 and High Speed 2
  • Provide school places for children with special needs

United Kingdom Independence Party

Under the heading ‘Common Sense Policies’ on Surrey UKIP’s website, a note reads: “All our policies are based on what is good for our Country and makes sense. Not what the EU wants but what is good for Great Britain.”
