Tributes have been paid to a “wonderful” 15-year-old Grey Court schoolgirl who died while on the Thames with a Kingston rowing team.

Rosie Mitchell was with Kingston Rowing Club at about 9am on Saturday when she “collapsed and fell unconscious”, the club said in a statement.

Paramedics arrived soon after but were unable to revive Rosie, who died in hospital later that day.

Tonight bouquets of flowers, photographs and candles have been placed outside the club, in Lower Ham Road, as friends gathered to pay their respects.

Kingston Rowing Club said: “There was a tragic occurrence at Kingston Rowing Club on Saturday morning, September 17, when Rosie Mitchell collapsed and lost consciousness while rowing.

“Rosie was 15 years old. Our hearts go out to Rosie’s parents, Rachel and Andrew, family and friends.”

Posting on Facebook, Grey Court School, in Richmond, said: “Unfortunately we were informed on Saturday of the tragic death of one of our Year 11 students.

“Rosie was a wonderful girl and a model student in every way. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Our thoughts and wishes are with her family at this difficult time.”

A police spokesman said: "We were called on Saturday, September 17 shortly before 09:10am to a teenager taken ill at Lower Ham Road.

"Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service.
