A branch of Natwest in Weybridge High Street has been closed for the day after a large police presence dealing with a suspected robbery.

Witnesses reported seeing several police cars parked outside the high street bank at about 11am today after a man appeared to run into the bank with a hammer.

This has not been confirmed by Surrey Police.

Witness Paul Collins said: “I saw a man lying across the floor being held down. I think he had been pepper-sprayed.

“I thought someone had died.

“The police wouldn’t say anything but I heard someone ran in there with a hammer.”

Another witness said they heard “someone shout out”, but could not distinguish what was said.

He said: “We really don’t know what happened, we presumed it was a robbery.”

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said that someone had been arrested but could not confirm any further details.
