Kingston Samaritans say they need more funding to ensure a planned move to a new base is successful.

The organisation, which also covers a large part of Richmond, plans to move from its Surbiton base in the summer to central Kingston, although an exact date has not been set.

Branch director Helen Dixon said: "The demand on our service is growing and from our new premises we will be able to reach out to more people.

"But we urgently need funds to help make this move a success in supporting those in distress."

A spokesman for the charity added: "We do not just support those who are feeling suicidal. Anyone who is distressed and struggling to cope can contact us.

"We are here round the clock every single day, including on our freephone number 116 123."

The charity already supports residents at Surbiton YMCA, trains Network Rail staff, works with Wandsworth Prison and gives talks to schools and community groups.

The spokesman said: "Kingston Samaritans are part of the national Samaritans organisation, but we are a charity in our own right and have to raise funds locally to cover our running costs.

"This year we are making a huge fundraising effort to secure a further £100,000 to enable us to fully deliver our service from this new location. So far we have raised over £14,000."
