There are just five days left to respond to a consultation on £6.4m cuts to the London fire service for the next year.

January 21: Wandsworth fire station could face permanent reduction to one engine as response times rise

November 30: London Fire Brigade braces for £8.1m cuts by 2017

The fire brigade must cut millions from its budget for the next year and two proposals put forward would do this without any compulsory redundancies.

Initially, the brigade announced that there would be £8.1m in cuts, but the Fire Brigade Union agreed to suspend their strike action on pensions, freeing £1.7m in contingency arrangements.

Option a would put 13 fire engines back into service across London, after they were cut in August 2013.

Savings would be made by using 'alternate crewing' meaning that only one crew would be in a fire station with a normal fire engine and a specialist fire engine - but would not be able to crew both at the same time.

Option b is to permanently remove fire engines from some stations which had more than one before they were removed 'temporarily' in August 2013.

Wandsworth would have its second engine permanently removed if option b was to go ahead.

The Wandsworth engine is often called out to Mortlake and Barnes Common, Merton Village and Wimbledon Park as the second engine.

Consultation responses must be received by 5pm on Monday, February 1.
