The Kingston Ballet School that helped nurture the dancing talents of Spider-Man is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend.

The dance school, in Canbury Park Road where the well-known troupe Ballet Boyz also dance, counts Tom Holland among its former pupils.

As well as taking on the Peter Parker/Spiderman role in the latest Hollywood blockbuster from Marvel Comic’s franchise, Mr Holland was also cast in Billy Elliot the Musical in the West End in 2008.

The school is celebrating its 20th birthday with a special performance of The Nutcracker this weekend.

Principle Louise Jefferson opened the ballet school in 1995 where she has been teaching ever since. The school now has more than 200 members.

She said: “To have started my first week in 1995 with 25 children, and to have 200 now is a huge achievement. The biggest pleasure is seeing everyone getting something out of it, and really enjoying themselves.”

This weekend’s performances of The Nutcracker will be performed by 197 members of the school, aged between three to 18 years old.

The school will perform two shows on Saturday and two shows on Sunday at the Arthur Cottrell Theatre, in Kingston College at 2pm and 4pm.

All the performances are sold out with more than 800 people expected to attend.

Ms Jefferson, one of five teachers at the school, said parents had played a huge part in organising the shows and helping to design the costumes and stage set, which will include a 12ft Christmas tree.

She added performers had been rehearsing every weekend and those in lead roles were “nervous but excited about performing”.

After this weekend’s performances, Ms Jefferson said her next task would be concentrating on helping members pass the Royal Academy of Dance exams.
