A schoolgirl killed after being hit by a truck in New Malden this morning has been named as Lavna Chuttoo.

The 14-year-old Coombe Girls' School student died at the scene. 

Her family has been informed.

Coombe Girl’s School headteacher Deborah Walls said: "The whole school has gone into a state of deep shock and mourning.

"No words can express the loss we feel. Our hearts are breaking.

"Everyone's thoughts are with Lavna's family and friends. 

"The staff will be talking to her friends today and offer what support we can to help them understand this devastating news, and we will continue to support them for as long as they need."

The school is believed to have held a special assembly today. 

Police were called to reports of a crash between a pedestrian and a heavy goods vehicle in Coombe Road at the junction with Lime Grove opposite Cambridge Avenue at 8.30am this morning.

Detectives from Metropolitan Police's serious collision investigation unit have launched an appeal for witnesses.

Detective Sergeant John Hartfree said: "Lime Grove and nearby roads would have been busy with traffic and pedestrians travelling to work and schools at the time this tragic collision took place.

“It is likely that a number of people witnessed the collision, and I am appealing for them to contact the police as soon as possible."

Kingston and Surbiton MP James Berry said: "My thoughts and I'm sure those of the whole community are with the family and friends of the Coombe Girls pupil who tragically lost her life this morning.

"My thoughts are also with the whole Coombe Girls community at this very difficult time and the emergency services who did their best this morning."

Officers cordoned off New Malden High Street following the rush-hour crash.

Paramedics from London Ambulance were called and London Air Ambulance also attended.

The schoolgirl was hit in Coombe Road at the junction with Lime Grove opposite Cambridge Avenue

A spokesman from London Ambulance said: "We sent a number of resources to the scene including an incident response officer and London's Air Ambulance.

"We treated a girl reported to be in her early teens in cardiac arrest at the scene.

"Sadly, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the patient, she was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance."

No arrests have been made but the driver did stop, a police spokesman said.

The K1 and 213 bus services were being diverted away from New Malden High Street.
