A care home has been branded unsafe after inspectors found smelly bedrooms and staff unsure what to do if they witnessed or suspected abuse.

Kingston Care Home in Jemmett Close, Coombe Road, Kingston was inspected by Care Quality Commission inspectors in January and February following information received by nurses from the Clinical Commissioning Group.

A report by the CQC concluded the home requires improvement.

It said: "The service was not safe.

"There was not always enough staff on duty to meet people’s needs.

"Chemicals and other substances hazardous to health were not always kept locked away when they were not in use and we found a number of outstanding repair and maintenance issues.

"These failings had all put people at risk of harm.

"Furthermore, although there were robust safeguarding procedures in place and staff understood what abuse was, some staff did not always know what to do if they witnessed or suspected abuse had occurred in the home.

It added: "Some of the bedrooms we viewed smelt malodorous.

"These failings meant people were placed at risk of injury or harm or their individual care needs were not being fully met."

The report also said the home had staff with good working relationships and the provider regularly sought people’s views about how care and support could be received and improved.
