A total of 1,658 children in Kingston managed to get a place at their first choice primary school, recent figures revealed.

From 2,005 applications received the borough managed to place 82 per cent of children at their preferred school and 92 per cent at one of their top three choices - these numbers also matched last year’s.

However 25 children remain without a place at a Kingston school and 79 others have been allocated a space that they had not chosen.

Councillor Andrea Craig, lead for schools, said: "We have outperformed most of London, we are very pleased. It is a triumph for Kingston again. This is very good news."

The London borough with the lowest first preference rate was Kensington and Chelsea, where only 59 per cent of children managed to get a place at their first choice primary school.

Nationally 81 per cent of London pupils managed to get a place at their first choice school and 93 per cent got a place at their top three.
