A Chessington schoolgirl has won her class a free visit to Chessington World of Adventures after bagging the first prize award in a festival story writing competition.

Lovelace Primary School pupil Thea Crake won over judges with her winter Gruffalo tale about Father Christmas and naughty children.

The competition, in association with the Surrey Comet, received 40 entries from classes across the borough.

The year 2 student will now be taking her class of 30 out for a school trip to the theme park next month, including an animal workshop.

Lovelace headteacher Rob Meakin said: "This is another fantastic story for the children of Lovelace, we are proud to show off the skills of our very talented children."

A spokeswoman from Chessington World of Adventures said: "There were 40 entries in total but we just loved Thea’s and we were particularly impressed with her inventive storytelling and also - although it was not part of the official judging - her brilliant handwriting."

Students from Fern Hill Primary School and Coombe Hill Junior School made up the top three entries and will be awarded a family of four day pass to the resort.
