A man was taken to hospital after being hit by a motorcycle in a suspected hit and run in North Cheam.

The 53-year-old was crossing Malden Road at the junction with London Road just before 12.30am this morning when vehicles began to move off from the traffic lights.

A motorcyclist hit the pedestrian, sending him careering down the road and the rider, who was knocked from his bicycle, got up and angrily berated the pedestrian.

The man then got back onto his motorcycle and drove off down Cheam Common Road, towards Worcester Park and Old Malden.

The pedestrian was taken to a south London hospital, but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Police said the motorcycle suffered damage in the collision, including losing a top box and mudguard.

Inspector Phil Parrett, from Sutton police, said: “It would have been obvious to the rider of the motorcycle that the pedestrian he had collided with was seriously injured.

“To act in the way he did, shouting at the unconscious man and riding off from the scene without attempting to seek medical help, was a truly heartless act.”

No arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.

Anyone who saw the incident or has information about the identity of the motorcyclist should call Sutton police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The collision happened at the Queen Victoria junction, North Cheam
