A woman was treated for smoke inhalation after a plastic container melted on a cooker.

Firefighters from New Malden were called to a home in Barnsbury Close, New Malden, at 5.20pm yesterday [February 20] after the elderly occupant placed the container on a hob that was still hot.

A New Malden firefighter said: “It was an electric, glass one and the glass retained the heat and it gave off plastic, toxic fumes.”

The occupant had working smoke alarms and was able to leave the property.

Firefighters administered first aid and oxygen until paramedics arrived.

The woman was treated at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.
