The publishing world is awash with change. While publishers are being more cautious and buying less, wannabe writers have more opportunities than ever to self publish and get their work out into the world.

Writers need to embrace the new ways of working and benefit from the changes in the industry- and this is what a new course – Is Everyone Now a Publisher – will be teaching prospective authors.

Dr Alison Baverstock, who set up Kingston University’s MA publishing course and wrote The Naked Author, is heading up the workshop at the end of March.

The course aims to help writers know their options when it comes to publishing their work.

Baverstock says: “The course is very practical.

“There is a lot of change in the publishing world at the moment and we are offering people a clear view of the landscape.”

This is the first time the course has been run and Baverstock has lined up some heavyweights from the industry to take students through their options and any challenges they might face.

Speakers will include Michael Bhaskar, author of The Content Machine and Andrew Lownie, founder of the Andrew Lownie Literary Agency.

However long established or recent your writing career, Baverstock thinks there will still be information you need to know covered in the course.

She points out that one of the most important things to remember when thinking about publishing your book is to do everything in the correct order.

She says: “Often people do things in the wrong order when they are publishing their books. A common mistake, for example, is getting your work edited before it is finished.

“The course will be going through all the mistakes like this that people can make as well as problems surrounding money and support.

“It’s all about helping people understand their options and getting to ask questions about the modern publishing world.”
