Former Hounslow borough commander and senior Scotland Yard officer Ali Dizaei jailed

The former head of Hounslow police has been jailed for assaulting and falsely arresting a man in a row over money.

Commander Ali Dizaei, 47, was sentenced to four years by Mr Justice Simon at London's Southwark Crown Court yesterday.

A jury convicted the former Hounslow borough commander of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice at the end of a four-week trial.

They found he attacked young Iraqi businessman Waad al-Baghdadi before arresting and attempting to frame him.

Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said: "Commander Ali Dizaei has been a police officer for nearly 25 years.

"It is extremely disappointing and concerning that this very senior officer has been found guilty of abusing his position and power.

"The public expect the police to treat them fairly and honestly and we are resolved to tackle corruption at every opportunity. He has breached that trust and damaged not only his own reputation but that of the entire police service. I am proud of the officers who gave evidence in this case and supported the IPCC investigation.

"Bearing in mind his rank and disgraceful behaviour he should not be surprised at the severity of his sentence."

Commander Dizaei was Hounslow's borough commander from 2005 to 2007. He later became Hammersmith and Fulham's top officer, before moving on to become one of Scotland Yard's most senior officers.

I question the need for a 'Black Police Group' in the Met. Why is it relevant except as a political tool? If we are going to start this sort of thing, let's have a 'Red Head Police Group' or a 'Newt Loving Police Group' as well.

The concept of the police is that they are there to maintain the Queen's Peace as one force, not a group of different 'interests' each fighting one another over supposed grievances. Let's ban all these specialist groups now and get the police back on the beat doing the job we expect them to do.
