"Unavoidable disruption" is expected in Epsom town centre when traffic signals are refurbished and pedestrian crossings are temporarily suspended later this month.

The signals in the High Street, Hook Road, Church Street, and Upper High Street are to be repaired by Surrey County Council (SCC) between October 29 and November 2, which will require the removal and replacement of all street furniture and cables.

Portable traffic signals will be in operation during the work, which will not to be able to accommodate pedestrian crossing facilities.

Grahame Bath, SCC’s traffic systems team leader, said: "Every effort will be made to ensure a speedy completion, but there will be some unavoidable disruption.

"We therefore ask that all are prepared for these works.

"We apologise for the temporary disruption and inconvenience but these essential works will leave us with all new equipment, which, using the latest technology should prove more reliable and fit to last for many years."
