Raw sewage has been bubbling up into a road for the past two weeks to the disgust of residents.

The waste is currrently seeping from one manhole cover in Preston Lane, Tadworth, and attempts by Thames Water to fix the problem have failed so far.

But Jane Feast who lives in the road said it has been leaking out of a number of manholes over the past fortnight.

She said: "It’s like a pipe has burst because raw sewage is just coming out of the manhole covers. It’s all over the footpath and going across the road where cars are driving. Children are walking to school in the mornings with it there. It’s disgusting.

"I live down the road from it, but can still smell it in my own garden as it is coming up through the drain."

Miss Feast said there had been a problem with sewage when she first moved there 12 years ago, but the problem had been rectified.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said it had been investigating the blockage since the beginning of this month and was still trying to locate its source. She said: "We thought we had resolved this, but the issue returned yesterday and we have since decided to do a full clean of the sewer pipe, nearly 300m in length, to remove the fat and grease which we believe is causing this blockage."

She said: "Pouring cooking fat and grease down the drain really causes problems for our sewer pipes.

"It may pour down the sink easy enough, but when it hits the sewer it gets cold and forms hideous ‘fatbergs’ which block the network and causes the waste to back-up like it has done here."

Thames Water is due to clean the sewer pipe on Thursday.
