Drivers and cyclists will enjoy a smoother ride following the announcement to double additional funding to local highway authorities.

Chancellor George Osborne’s budget announcement of a further £100m to repair potholes brings the national budget up to £200m, of which Surrey will receive £4m.

Esher and Walton MP Dominic Raab said: “This is good news for local taxpayers. Surrey roads have long been neglected, principally for lack of funding from central government.

“This investment is vital, for residents and businesses – especially if we are going to host the Olympic cycling in Elmbridge in 2012.”

Leader of Surrey County Council Dr Andrew Povey said: “It’s good to see the Government taking action to tackle the problem of repairing roads.

“Good quality roads stimulate business which leads to economic growth. By properly investing in roads the Government can help businesses drive the country’s economic recovery.

To promote greater transparency and accountability all local highway authorities will publish information on their website by September 30 showing how the money has been spent.
