Firefighters have rescued a 4ft long python from a house fire after neighbours who could smell smoke sounded the alarm.

The owners of the snake were on holiday, according to Epsom Station fire fighters who attended the scene of the fire on The Greenway, in Epsom, at about 9.45pm on Saturday (August 28).

A crew wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and fought the fire which was confined to one room. While they were there, they found the python in its enclosure and took it out to safety.

Fire fighter Dan Bolton said: “It was very friendly. It just wraps around you hand and stays there. We kept it for a while until the RSPCA came to rescue it and I understand it is well and has been returned to its owners.”

No one was injured in the fire.
