A have-a-go heroine hit a robber over the head with a stool but could not stop him leaving a Tadworth bookies with handfuls of cash.

A police helicopter and dog teams were called in to join the search for the balaclava-wearing robber but he made his escape on foot.

The incident happened at Ladbrokes in Tattenham Way between 9pm and 9.30pm on Friday when the man walked in and told the two employees to hand over the cash. No one else was in the shop at the time.

The robber walked into the sectioned-off staff area and snatched the cash.

As he left the shop he was challenged by one of the employees who hit the robber over the head with a stool but the man left on foot down an alleyway towards Waterer Gardens.

He was wearing a balaclava, gloves, dark jeans, dark coloured top and boots.

Detectives are calling on anyone who can help identify the robber to contact them before he strikes again.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Nicky Hunt, said: “This was a frightening experience for the employees and clearly we need to find the man responsible for this robbery.

“The employee was very brave challenging the robber and luckily he did not use any force or threaten her. I am appealing to members of the community for your help to catch this man and prevent him from committing further offences.

“I urgently need to speak to anyone who was in the Tattenham Way area at around 9pm or 9.30pm to come forward. Did you see a man running away from Ladbrokes or perhaps you live in nearby Waterer Gardens and can tell me where he went from there? If so, please come forward with the information I need in order to arrest and bring this man to justice.”
