Epsom residents are becoming increasingly concerned that bogus charities selling donated clothes are taking money away from genuine causes.

Peter Mills, of River Way in Ewell, contacted the Epsom Guardian after receiving leaflets from various fake companies.

" Some people will be getting these and falling for them, the real charities could be losing out.”

Peter Mills

He said: "We get different leaflets through the door every week. All the charities supply their own bags but these ones rub your face in it by asking to put the things in your own plastic bags and attach their leaflets to it. They're obviously making money out of it. Some people will be getting these and falling for them, the real charities could be losing out."

The Association of Charity Shops advertises a strict code of conduct for collecting goods from residential homes and say that charities involved in doorstep collections should be licensed by the council and provide their own bags or containers with a charity number.

A spokesman said: "Bogus collectors will try to exploit people's generosity. If possible, members of the public should take donations directly to a local charity shop. But, if you're leaving donations out for collection, please only do so for charities you recognise.

"Legitimate collection bags will show a charity's registered charity number and will declare it as such. People should be aware of bags which seem to be from a charity but only show a registered number' or registration' - it's probably not a charity."

A spokeswoman for Epsom and Ewell Borough Council confirmed that companies calling themselves Kkarolinas Ltd or Polotex Ltd were not registered as charities.

She said: "The council advises residents to carefully check the details of any group asking for donations of items for charities.

"There are many worthy and important charities that desperately need help, so we don't want people to stop giving. It is a great shame that some people take advantage of others' generosity. Action will be taken against anyone purporting to be a charity and taking goods without a licence."

Do not leave clothes out for collection for these or companies or for legitimate charities as the bogus ones will turn up and collect them instead. The only way to get rid of these companies is to take your donations directly to the shop.

Hi! I live in Drayton Park, next tp Arsenal tube station and today m orning, I,ve got a leaflets through the door saying in capitals letters "Third world""Clothing Collection on thursday- today- Thank you for helping us to help others " "Urgently needed"....,
,ve spended couple of hours carefully selecting usefull items for people that needs it so much, so much. I decided to double check leaflet to find out more about organitation and I found out that it is not a charity but a Ltd call KKAROLINAS LTD.THEY MAKE PROVIDE OF WHAT WE GIVE FOR FREE BECAUSE WE WANT IT TO BE GIVEN FOR FREE TO WHO NEEDS IT.

Please carry on contributing with all fair causes and charities, but just make sure that they are not taking advantage of you, and the poorest ones. It is amazing that they carry on doing it. We should all contribute more with the good organitations and put in jail to this other kind of lyers.

Can anybody do effectively something about this case? I can research and report but unfortunately I am unenployed at the moment, and I am not policeman or judge...

I double checked KKAROLINAS LIMITED after receiving a flyer through my door in Willesden Green. I too spent almost an hour getting things ready only to find they were a fraud. I'll now take my things to a charity shop. I'n tempted to stick their flyer to a bag a rubbish for them to take away...

Just stumbled across this article whilst googling KKAROLINAS Ltd. They are still active, got a leaflet through my door only last week. I have an address you can send your leaflets back to....and make sure you mark them for the attention of the manager and do NOT put a stamp on the envelope, make the degenerates pay. 34a Colmer Road, SW16 5JZ.

I'm in Islington and also just stumbled across this article while trying to find out more on KKARONLINAS. I just got the exact same flyer today through my door.

Real charities urgently need donations because people aren't buying as much and consequently not getting rid of as much stuff. Please your stuff to Oxfam and other charities, not to a limited company.
