Update: Epsom Road was re-opened at 11am

A woman has been taken to hospital after a serious crash between two cars led to the closure of a main road during rush hour. 

The A24 Epsom Road has been closed in both directions since 8.30am this morning, after the crash at 8am.

The crash took place at the junction of Lower Morden Lane and Elm Road West. 

A spokeswoman from the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.02am today to reports of a road traffic collision on Lower Morden Lane, Morden. 

"We sent an ambulance crew. 

"We treated a woman at the scene and took them to a hospital in west London."

There are heavy delays in the area, and congestion has been reported from A24 London Road to A2043 Cheam Common Road.

Police are warning drivers to use alternative routes. 

A spokesman from Merton police said: "Two cars were involved in a head on collision with fortunately only minor injuries. 

"Traffic diversions were quickly put in place, so if you can bypass the area you should to avoid delays."
