A new therapeutic sensory room at a learning disabilities charity in Epsom was funded by craft-making volunteer who donates all her proceeds to charity.

Annette Emery, a volunteer at the Sunnybank Trust in Temple Road, Epsom, sells handmade jewellery and donates all her profits to local charities.

She recently donated more than £200 to the charity after organising a craft fair. The money was spent on a sensory room consisting of fibre optic lights, soothing ambient music, an aromatherapy diffuser, and calming multi-colour lights.

The charity believes that in stimulating the senses of people with varying levels of learning disabilities, the room would help people interact with the room and better engage with the world around them. The charity believes the room would have the greatest impact on club members with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

The sensory room was unveiled at a meeting of the charity’s Kites Club, the charity’s weekly social club, on Thursday, September 15.

Dorothy Watson, CEO of The Sunnybank Trust, added: “Annette is a fantastic fundraiser and we are very grateful for her passion for Sunnybank.

“Being able to provide a sensory space for our club members makes a tremendous difference to some of the most marginalised people in our community.

“We’ve wanted to provide such a space for some time and Annette’s fundraising has made our dream a reality.”

Annette raised more than £200 in one afternoon at a craft fair organised to raise money specifically for the Sunnybank Trust.

Annette said, “‘I really enjoy my hobby and other people seem to like what I create, so it seems natural to put the two together to raise money for charities I care deeply about.”
