St Ebba's Hospital in Hook Road, Epsom
Firefighters prevented a “potential catastrophe” at an old Epsom hospital last night when they stopped a fire spreading.
Crews from Banstead and Leatherhead fire stations were called to St Ebba’s Hospital in Hook Road, Epsom at about 5.45pm.
A spokesman from Banstead fire station said they believe “a light fitting burnt out, melted, and fused itself to the carpet”.
The crews spent about 45 minutes isolating the electricity supply and ventilating the building from the smoke billowing up from the carpet.
The spokesman added: “It was nothing drastic as nobody was there, but it was a potential catastrophe averted.”
