Nearly 200 cyclists took to the roads of Epsom and Ewell on a sunny afternoon last weekend as part of an annual ride around the borough.

More than 180 cyclists and passengers aged between two and 70 rode through Epsom Downs, Epsom Common, Nonsuch Park, Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve and Horton Country Park on Sunday.

Your Local Guardian:

The fastest rider completed the 20-mile course in under two hours, while others enjoyed the route at a more leisurely pace by stopping for lunch and ice creams.

The annual tradition was started in 2014 – a year after Stage 7 of the Tour of Britain started in Epsom. The council hope the ride, along with a round the borough hike held in September, will build on the Olympic legacy of London 2012.

Councillor Chris Frost opened the event on Sunday, May 15, as one of his final acts as mayor of Epsom and Ewell.

His tenure as mayor came to an end on Tuesday, May 17.

Cllr Frost said on the day: “It is great to see so many keen cyclists here to take on the 20 mile route around some of Epsom and Ewell’s beautiful open spaces.

“The council are pleased to be able to host this type of event year on year as part of the Olympic legacy, as Surrey continues to build a reputation for some of the best routes for cyclists in the country.”

The Round the Borough Hike, organised by the borough council, will take place on Saturday, September 3.
