Drivers face temporary lane closures on the A24 around Leatherhead until next month while the council carries out litter picking and grass cutting.

Mole Valley District Council says the work is necessary to ensure road safety while retaining the area’s natural beauty.

The council has warned that road lanes will be temporarily closed to “ensure the safety of both contractors and road users”.

The work will be carried out by MVDC’s contractors The Landscape Group and Surrey County Council on the A24 between Capel and Leatherhead bypasses between Monday, May 16 and Thursday, June 9.

The vast majority of the scheduled work will take place in the day, with some works needing to be undertaken at night, from Monday, June 6 to June 9.

Councillor Lucy Botting, executive member for well-being, said: "We have received a good amount of feedback from residents and road users who have noted the beauty of the wildflowers and grass along the A24, the home to butterflies, bees and the local eco-system.

“With this in mind, I am delighted that we have been able make changes to our grass cutting arrangements to leave areas of wildflowers alone, where it is safe to do so.

“This will help retain the natural beauty of the area, whilst ensuring the safety of road users by keeping entrances and exits to junctions and other sightlines free from long grass or plants."
