Two children were kidnapped and driven five miles in a car stolen and driven off by a person running from police.

Surrey Police had earlier tried to stop a car on the southbound carriageway of the M25 just before 10am today.

The car did not stop for police but later stopped on the hard shoulder of the motorway near the turn-off to junction 10 of the A3. A group of people were seen to run from the car.

One person is then thought to have confronted the driver of a stopped Toyota on a nearby slip road, before stealing their car and driving off.

Two young passengers were in the stolen car, with the adult driver left at the side of the motorway.

A Surrey Police spokesman confirmed the stolen car was found abandoned later in the Whiteley Village area in Hersham, with the two children also abandoned but unhurt.

From the point at which the car was stolen, it travelled just over five miles, with the children on board.

The M25 and A3 were partially closed and divers faced queues and delays during the chase.

Officers and still looking for the group of people, with the aid of a police helicopter.

The spokesman added: "This is a fast-moving and ongoing incident and officers are in the process of establishing the circumstances surrounding the events."

Anyone who has information about any part of the chase and theft should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference P16098153 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
