Firefighters say a smoke alarm might have saved the life of a sleeping pensioner in Epsom last night after it alerted him to a fire in his kitchen.

Crews from Epsom, Banstead and Leatherhead fire stations gave the man oxygen after an oven fire in Rosebery Avenue, Epsom at about 8pm last night.

An elderly man called the emergency services after his smoke alarm woke him and alerted him to the fire.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the kitchen and used a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

Crews were at the house for about an hour.

A spokesman from Epsom fire station said: β€œA smoke alarm woke him and alerted him to the fire.

β€œIt could have saved his life.”
