The Normandy-based market, French at Home, returned to Leatherhead on Friday, November 20 - just a week after 130 people were murdered by ISIS during a series of coordinated attacks in the French capital.

The French market - along with an Italian food market, Italian in Piazza - first came to Leatherhead this summer, and both proved very successful.

The smell of continental meats, cheeses, breads and crepes filled the air on Friday, November 20 as French at Home made its return to Leatherhead High Street.

Shoppers started their Christmas shopping early this year at market stalls peddling authentic French foods, soaps, books and artwork.

The Italian food market made its long-awaited return in September, and proved just as popular as the French market.

Councillor Howard Jones, executive member for town centres, said the return of French at Home highlighted its previous success as well as the resolve of the stallholders to make the journey with the Paris attacks still fresh in their minds.

He said: "These two markets have proved very popular in the past with the sheer variety of delicacies on offer from both European countries.

"In the past people were just attracted by something different, and this was reflected with the market being impressed with their takings.

"But no doubt this time the events in Paris helped encourage people to come along. Everyone has been celebrating with tricolores."
