A tree felled in wet and windy conditions along a busy, unlit Banstead road during Storm Barney "could have killed someone", according to a driver whose path was crossed by the tree.

A fir tree covered the right-hand side of Holly Lane approaching Banstead High Street, is believed to have been blown down between 6pm and 10pm on Tuesday, November 18.

Surrey County Council were called to 11 incidents between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Jenny Green, 57, a vocal coach from Winifred Road, Coulsdon, was coming back from a singing workshop in New Malden at around 10pm when she saw the tree, which she said was more than 35ft tall.

Your Local Guardian:

She said: "Last night when I was coming home I couldn’t understand why all the cars were flashing me, then I came upon this huge fir tree down on the right.

"I flashed as many cars as I could - there were loads of branches from it.

"It was already down, thank God! It could have killed someone for sure if it had landed on a car, as there is no lighting on the road."

The tree has since been moved to the side of the road.

A spokesperson for Surrey County Council said: "We had 11 call-outs between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning to remove trees that had fallen onto our highways following Storm Barney, including Holly Lane and these were treated as priority calls and dealt with as soon as they could."
