Elderly and disabled customers will have to travel further to visit the bank once the last branch in Ewell closes its doors.

Barclays, the only remaining bank in Ewell High Street, will close at the start of October after use of the branch halved since 2008.

Brian Angus, chairman of Ewell Village Residents’ Association, said there used to be at least five banks in Ewell and "mobility impaired" residents are going to struggle to cope without one.

Earlier this month Mr Angus wrote to eight bank managers in Epsom and asked them to help fill the vacuum by providing services in Ewell Village.

His letter said: "We are particularly concerned about businesses and voluntary organisations having cash and cheques to deposit, and vulnerable customers requiring access to face-to-face assistance."

Nigel Taylor, Barclays community leader, said the Ewell branch is set to close on Friday, October 2, as people increasing use online and telephone banking services.

Mr Taylor said: "We will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally."

He added: "Our colleagues at the branch have been consulted about the change and will be given the opportunity to work at a nearby branch."

After the closure, the nearest branch will be just over a mile away in Epsom High Street while everyday transactions can be carried out at a post office counter at the a Co-op in Ewell.

When asked about the fact it is the last bank in Ewell, a Barclays spokesman said: "The majority of people in Ewell do not bank with Barclays, we will be helping customers to find ways to bank after the branch closes."
