Severely sight impaired gym goers have thanked leisure centre staff for their assistance and kindness.

Glenn Baldock, 33, and Nance Ellis, 59, presented certificates to the fitness staff at Rainbow Leisure Centre in East Street, Epsom, last month.

The pair live at Swail House, independent living for the visually impaired in Epsom, and they did the presentation on behalf of Swail House Impaired Vision Awareness Resource (SHIVAR).

Mr Baldock said "The staff looked after my previous dog and now looks after Arny. He goes into the back office while I swim and gym.

"They always treat him really well and make sure he is safe and comfortable. Without them, I could not do any exercise at all.

"I would like to thank all the staff for the time and effort that they have given to Arny and myself."

Nance Ellis, who co-founded SHIVAR, said: "I am usually accompanied by a carer who helps me in the changing rooms in the pool and also around the gym.

"At all times the staff in both areas have always been very helpful, courteous and pleasant.

"On the odd occasion when I have had no carer, the staff have not hesitated to step in and help me even more."

The pair hoped that their experience will encourage people with disabilities to try out the facilities at the leisure centre.

Mrs Ellis said: "Since March 2014, I’ve embarked on a weight loss program and to date have lost close to six stone.

"If it weren’t for the facilities at the Rainbow Centre, I certainly would have found this endeavour by far more difficult."
