A woman is trekking to the highest peak in Spain to raise money for research into the disease which has affected her grandmother.

Louise Mewett, 23, from Banstead, is taking part in the gruelling expedition in the Sierra Nevada trek as part of management consultancy Deloitte’s charity challenge 2015.

She will spend two days climbing the highest peak, Mulhacén.

The challenge is seeking to raise £1m for charity partners Alzheimer's Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK.

Ms Mewett’s grandmother, Ruth, 83, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four years ago.

Her family moved her from her home in Southampton so she could be cared for closer to her family in Banstead.

Ms Mewett said: "My grandma and I have always been really close.

"Her Alzheimer’s means she rarely remembers what she did the previous day and so she is constantly ‘living for the moment.’

"Filling her days with activities she has always loved increases her quality of life and that’s the most important thing.

"I’m so excited to go to Spain as part of the Deloitte charity challenge 2015 - it’s an incredible opportunity - I want to raise as much money as possible so people like my grandmother get the help and support they need and deserve."
