Mascots and families dressed as superheroes took part in a charity walk the day before a brave boy with cancer celebrated his birthday.

Ollie Lovis, from Ewell, who turned four on Monday, went to the walk in Nonsuch Park dressed as Spiderman like his father, while his sister went as Elsa from Disney hit Frozen.

The family were joined by hundreds of people and characters including Haydon the Womble, Hello Kitty, Fireman Sam and Minnie Mouse.

Ollie’s mother Terri Lovis, 35, said they thought he would not be able to go to the walk because he woke up with a chest infection and high temperature on Sunday.

But after having some medicine and sleeping a bit longer, he had recovered enough and even managed to pick out the raffle tickets for the event.

Mrs Lovis said: "He woke up and said ‘I need to put my Spiderman outfit on, it’s the walk today’. It was amazing, really good. It was lovely. One family said ‘it’s like going to Euro Disney but without the queues."

Mrs Lovis said the walk has raised "at least £2,000 and counting" for children’s cancer charity Momentum, which has supported her family.

She said: "It’s all going towards a boat on the Thames so families can have a little respite and retreat. I think it will be a really nice thing for them to have."

Haydon the Womble, who delivered donated presents to Ollie at Christmas, invited other mascots including Crystal Palace Eagles and KNK Kev to the walk. Frozen characters and Iggle Piggle also took part.

On Monday, Haydon said on his blog: "Today is Ollie’s fourth birthday, something of which is quite an occasion, after he was told he had months to live just before Christmas, but this very brave, adorable and special boy, wasn’t going to miss out on presents and cake. On Sunday we celebrated his birthday in a great way."

After the walk, he said: "The sun even came out to play, to join us on what was a super day, which made the conditions slightly tougher, but all the more worthwhile, we all set off around the park, which to this womble felt a lot longer than a mile, but maybe because I kept going backwards and forwards for hugs and high fives (hey I cannot resist them!)."

Dee Besant, a fundraiser for Momentum, said: "It was absolutely amazing to get the support of the community for such a lovely cause. It was a great day."
