A young boy left "wedged" under a car after being hit by a motorbike this morning is in hospital with minor injuries.

The accident happened in Sefton Road, near to Blenheim High School, in Epsom, at 8.30am.

The boy is a Year 9 student at the school.

Tracey Fantham, headteacher, said in a statement: "A male Year 9 student, on the way to school this morning, stepped out between two parked cars on Sefton Road and was hit by a motorbike which was reported to be travelling at about 20mph."

She said a member of the public called the emergency services which arrived "very promptly" and that school staff members helped manage the situation and support students who had witnessed the accident.

Ms Fantham said an air ambulance was called initially as it was not known how serious the boy's injuries were.  But after being assessed at the scene by paramedics, he was taken by road to St Helier Hospital with minor injuries.

The boy's parents were informed immediately and his mother travelled with him in the ambulance.

The headteacher added: "The safety of our students is paramount and I was therefore distressed to hear of the accident this morning.

"Thankfully, the student’s injuries do not appear to be serious and our thoughts are with the boy and his parents at this time.

"My staff in attendance and the emergency services did an excellent job in responding to the incident and supporting the student and his parents this morning."

Initially a spokesman for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service had said the accident involved a 14-year-old girl, who had been hit by a motorbike and that she was "wedged underneath the motorbike".

But a witness - a woman who lives on the road - then contacted the newspaper to say this information was not correct.

The lady, who did not want to be named, said the accident happened right outside her house.

She said a boy had been hit by a motorbike and ended up underneath a parked car on the road.

"I didn't hear anything.  I came outside and saw lots of people crowding roud the boy," the woman said.

"He was a Blenheim student.

"He was hit by the bike and ended up under the parked car.  Everyone was trying to work out how he ended up underneath the car.

"We got blankets for him."

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was called to reports of a pedestrian, a teenage boy, who had been hit by a motorbike.

He said: "Ambulance crews in an ambulance car and an ambulance attended the scene and we also assigned the air ambulance to attend the incident.

"The boy was assessed and treated at the scene and has been taken to St Helier Hosptial suffering from injuries including suspected leg injuries."

A Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance spokesman said the boy was taken to the hospital, by road, with injuries to his head and lower leg.

Two fire engines, one from Epsom and one from Banstead, went to the accident.

The woman said the boy was taken to hospital.

An Epsom fire station spokesman said this morning that firefighters and paramedics has been working to rescue the child.

He said: “We believe a 14-year-old child has been involved in a traffic accident and is wedged underneath a vehicle.”

A police spokesman said: "Surrey Police was called to Longmead Road, Epsom at 8.37am today following reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a teenage boy.

"As a result of the collision the boy became stuck underneath a vehicle parked in the road and was freed with help from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

"The boy was taken to St Helier Hospital with minor injuries."
