A woman was taken to hospital after a car crash in Epsom this afternoon.

A driver said she saw an ambulance and two crashed cars in Wilmerhatch Lane at the junction with Loop Road at about 3pm.

Rosemary Najim said: "It looked like a nasty crash. As soon as I saw the road block and ambulance I was concentrating on how to get through safely."

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman said a woman in her 70s with chest and back pain was taken to St Helier Hospital after the car crash at about 2.40pm.

This afternoon Epsom and Ewell Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team posted on Facebook: "Please avoid Wilmerhatch Lane,

Epsom, around the back of the hospital to the RAC club as we are currently dealing with an accident along the road there.

"Please pass this message on to friends/family/colleagues who may normally use this route on their commute."

A Surrey Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We were called to an incident on Loop Road, Epsom, following a collision between two cars at 2.55pm.

"We sent two fire engines and they were on the scene for 45 minutes to make the area safe due to fuel on the road, the ambulance service were also called to deal with any injuries."

A spokesman at Leatherhead fire station said they rescued a woman from one of the cars. He said: "We cut the roof off the car and got her out."
